Microsoft said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2026\/microsoft-azure-tops-100b-in-annual-revenue-as-record-ai-spending-cuts-into-cash-flow\/\">Azure grew 43%<\/a>, passing $100 billion in annual revenue for the first time. Amazon said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2026\/aws-is-booming-but-amazons-free-cash-flow-turns-negative-on-record-ai-spending\/\">AWS grew 37%<\/a>, its fastest pace in 18 quarters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft and Amazon are now the world\u2019s fourth and fifth most valuable companies, respectively. The three ahead of them (Nvidia, Alphabet and Apple) are all headquartered in the Bay Area, although each has sizeable engineering centers in the Seattle region. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amazon rose 4.6% in intraday trading to $284.15 as of publication time, after touching an all-time high of $287.20 earlier in the session, giving it a market value of $3.06 trillion. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft climbed 5.2% to $488.97, worth $3.63 trillion. Its rally began Thursday, when it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-07-30\/microsoft-eyes-history-with-490-billion-pop-in-market-value\">added nearly $450 billion in market value<\/a>, the largest one-day gain by any company on record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rallies came despite AI spending plans that have unsettled investors for much of the year. Microsoft went into earnings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2026\/microsoft-earnings-preview-record-ai-spending-and-a-stock-near-a-one-year-low\/\">near a one-year low<\/a>, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2026\/microsoft-earnings-preview-after-a-357-billion-wipeout-tech-giant-gets-another-chance\/\">a $357 billion wipeout<\/a> to start the year.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/omny.fm\/shows\/geekwire-podcast\/amazons-next-big-business-satya-nadellas-diy-app-and-a-vcs-rallying-cry-for-seattle-tech\/embed?media=audio&amp;size=wide&amp;style=cover\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"0\" title=\"Amazon's next big business, Satya Nadella's DIY app, and a VC's rallying cry for Seattle tech&#10;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s all still coming at a huge cost. Microsoft spent a record $41 billion on capital projects last quarter and told investors to expect more than $50 billion in the current quarter. Amazon raised its 2026 forecast to about $220 billion from $200 billion, citing rising memory chip prices. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one sign of the impact of the spending, Microsoft\u2019s free cash flow fell 23% last quarter. Amazon\u2019s free cash flow turned negative for the first time since 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But cloud growth and other signs of demand for AI seem to have appeased investors for now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told investors the spending reflects unmet demand: \u201cEven at that amount, we will still not have enough capacity to meet all the demand we have in 2026, and I believe this dynamic will also be true in 2027 too. In fact, the demand we already have for 2028 is striking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gains come as both companies operate with fewer people.
