Sound Great and Inexpensive
Overall, these buds are great, especially for the price. I got the USB-C variant with the DAC. They sound great, not “tinny” or hollow, with a well balanced sound profile (as far as my untrained ears can tell). The DAC version has a few different profiles denoted by color, but I just leave it on the default purple/music profile. They sound way better than my old wired Google Pixel Buds and absolutely smash all other (wired) buds and headphones I had laying around. They come in three pieces: right bud, left bud, and cable. They are easy to connect with my only gripe being there is no right/left indicator. You have to guess which one goes where; for my purposes (music/videoes/podcasts) it doesn’t matter much, but it would matter in games. The cable is a good quality and good length. The thickness is on par with the wired Pixel Buds and doesn’t feel cheap (like every other pair of buds). It will likely stand up to a good amount of abuse since I tend to haphazardly bundle them up and toss them into my backpack. Time will tell, of course, and I will update this review if issues arise.I normally don’t like buds because I don’t like how they feel in my ears, but these are quite comfortable. I have worn them for hours without them moving or becoming uncomfortable. They block out some noise, but not everything, which is expected and preferred. My only complaint is the included instructions, which are frankly unusable. They are quite small, which is fine, but the DPI on whatever printer was used is so low that you can’t read them. I really wish they would include the QR code instead, since finding them on KZ’s official website isn’t straightforward. That being said, this is a minor complaint.I would definitely recommend these and might buy another pair for traveling. The simplicity of wired buds is great, no batteries, no Bluetooth, just plug-and-play.

One of the better fitting IEMs I’ve tried and sounds great with heavy metal
Once upon a time, I had written off earbuds and IEMs as I couldn’t ever find a good fit. But times have changed and there are a lot of options, not to mention the fact that IEM tech has exploded in recent years. Now that I’ve tried the KZ Axas IEMs, I can say that these are pretty good for music. These IEMs come with options for ear tip sizes. I typically use one of the smaller sizes to get them to stay in my ears, and I can say that the fit on the Axas is good, and of course the hook, which some may not like (I do), really keeps the monitors at least near the correct position even if they should shake loose.I’ve only used these briefly while gaming so that I could have an understanding of how they work with (in this case) an Xbox Series X. Plugged into the 3.5mm jack on the controller, you may need to adjust the volume at the console level if you’ve been using over ear headphones as these will be very loud due to their sensitivity. Once done, the mute functionality is pretty great and does what it’s supposed to. There’s good sound directionality to help you determine where in-game objects are.My main use for these IEMs has been music, particularly with my Fiio JM21 DAP. These work very well with this particular player and have a ridiculous amount of headroom. Using the low amplifier setting and turning the volume about 25% of the way up gives me great sound quality and plenty of volume. They adapt well to EQing as well. I couldn’t find a preset, so I used one from my KZ Saga IEMs and adjusted in real time to get the sound I wanted. It was super easy. I listen to a lot of thrash and death metal, and the drivers keep up with the tempo and heaviness with ease. It really sounds very good! The monitors as noise isolating (not to be mistaken for cancelling) and to be honest they do pretty well at this. There’s a good seal formed with my ears and outside noises are definitely dulled. Think fans, low chatter in the next room, etc. It’s this feature particularly that in my mind justifies the price- typically I would think these should be a little cheaper to be more competitive in their price bracket, but the value proposition is improved by both the noise isolation capabilities and the inline controls.I’ve also noticed that I find these monitors to be a little more comfortable than many others. Despite the good seal formed, I don’t feel the pressure or invasiveness I sometimes feel with IEMs. I hardly feel them there unless I think about it. So with the great sound and nearly flawless fit/comfort level, this is a very solid choice, especially if you want inline controls for phone calls or gaming.
