Highly flexible, robust RFID/NFC access control reader
This reader is very solidly built, super flexible in deployment, and supports both HF and LF RFID/NFC tags. The HF tags are MF Classic (clones), and authentication appears to be by UID only, there are no locked sectors or other security measures found.LF tags are EM4100, with all the (lack of) security inherent in that. The kit includes an “admin card” (LF), which enables the administrator to add or delete other cards. There’s also an IR remote, which enables adding and deleting access cards either by scanning the card, or by selecting them by “user ID” or card UID. The IR remote requires entry of a PIN to access the admin functions, so any random person with a remote can’t easily hack the system. The reader can be configured either to make its own internal go/no-go decision and provide an “unlock” output to control a door latch or alarm system. It can also be configured in Wiegand mode, where it outputs the card IDs using the standard D0/D1 protocol and offers external control of the LED and beeper, so that an external access-control system can manage it.Some minor security nitpicks:Identifying cards by UID alone isn’t terribly secure, and I’d really like to see it use some data in a locked sector to slightly raise the bar. Not much that can be done on LF, that’s just inherently insecure. The “admin” card especially should be an HF card (making it harder to read/sniff at a distance) and definitely ought to employ some security lock features. The usual physical attacks — if someone dismounts the reader from the wall, and it’s used in “standalone” mode, they can short the release wire or the “exit button” wire and open the door. With more involved manipulation they could also perform a factory reset and enroll a new admin card.Using the Wiegand mode with an external access controller mitigates these attacks — there’s still the ESPkey, but that’s a higher bar.If you’re looking for an access control system for a typical home or business application, and you’re not defending against determined and sophisticated attackers, this might fit well.

Working fine as standalone lock controller.
I have this RFID reader controlling an electric lock. All works as expected.Reader-to-RFID proximity for successful reads seems a bit smaller than for some other readers. But as most people physically touch their RFID device to the reader anyway, this doesn’t seem to be a problem.I’ve not tested this reader’s weather resistance. Its electronics all appear well sealed in an elastomeric gel.

Surprising features in a small package!
This RFID reader acts both as a built in controller if needed (in this case it just needs 12v power supply), or it can act strictly as a reader if you have another controller panel to connect it to. I am impressed with the number of features this offers and definitely have no qualms about recommending it for non-commercial uses. Be aware that it also supports Mifare RFID cards which are much more secure than the old Weigand type. Be aware also that you need an electronic lock in addition to this (the most common would be an electric strike, there are lots available on Amazon). This is just the RFID reader (and controller if you wish). Attached are some photos of various wiring schemes from the leaflet that it came with. I recommend this!

    Performs as advertised
System works as expected, no issues to report.
