A great mic for its price range!
It’s no surprise that AKG would make a great budget-level microphone. I expected to be impressed, and I was.The first thing you notice about this microphone is its heavy weight quality build. When you pick it up, it immediately feels like a quality product, and has the weight and solidness of a mic 5 times the price. This microphone would be an excellent choice for podcasters who value not only sound quality, but also looks. This is a sharp looking microphone, with exceptional build quality. But, the important thing is the sound quality, right? It impresses in this area as well. Although AKG states that this microphone will handle high sound pressure levels (I don’t doubt that it will), I found it to be a tad bright for micing kick drums or low toms. It’s a decent multi purpose microphone, but I feel like it’s probably best suited for vocals or voice applications, with perhaps some lower SPL instruments like micing an acoustic guitar, or placing on a stand in front of an amp.I was curious about the mic’s frequency response curve, and found a chart from the manufacturer that I’ve attached to my review. As I suspected, you’ll notice a small lift in the mids and low highs. This is in the zone of what some engineers refer to as “air”, and is a desired quality in a vocal microphone. It has good lower end response, but the slight lift in the airy frequencies make it a very natural sounding microphone for voiceover use and some instruments.Another thing you’ll notice about this microphone is it is very sensitive to the proximity effect, but in a good way. If you’re not aware of what this is, it’s the change in behavior of a microphone’s character as the sound source gets closer or further away from the microphone itself. Again, this is an area where this little microphone shines. The microphone’s proximity effect is evident, and when your speaking or singing voice is in the mic’s sweet spot, the presence of the signal is excellent. This is again great for things like voiceover work, audio book recording, or intimate vocals. This mic won’t replace everything else in your studio’s microphone locker, but it is a solid tool for vocal and acoustic instruments with some good uses for amplified instruments as well. For home studios, it’s a real winner. For podcasters, you’ll appreciate the excellent presence it brings when you’re in the right spot for speaking, and to compliment the great presence and air qualities, it looks fantastic on camera as well. It’s absolutely an impressive little microphone from an established company with a track record of excellent products. For the price, you will absolutely not be disappointed with the C104. It’s a high quality player in this price range and I give it 5 stars.

Detailed, but Natural Sounding Vocal Recreation – Great for Creators and Podcasting
I upgraded my setup to the AKG C104 from the previous Shure PG48 microphone, and the results are quite impressive.First, aesthetically, this is a visually interesting microphone built with a heavy cast metal body and a silver input side to the microphone. On the back of the microphone, the body and mesh are matched in black so as not to draw attention away from a subject on screen (if you’re streaming or otherwise using this in conjunction with video capture). The AKG logo is nicely situated on the front, with simple, and minimal text indicating the AKG Brand, and C104 (model) on the back.Audio quality is very natural. Coming from a much less expensive microphone, the AKG C104 delivers extremely clean and natural sounding audio with good frequency response across the entire range. I noticed a very full sounding vocal reproduction immediately, as the C104 picks up nicely a much deeper range of low frequency than my previous microphone. As a monthly podcaster, the vocal reproduction of this microphone is much closer to what you might expect simply talking to me in person and it enhances the experience of our recording significantly. The C104 is a 48v powered microphone. You will need an audio inteface capable of feeding the device 48v phantom power. The included mounting hardware is adequate, and worked well on my overarm microphone mount in the studio. I chose to flip the mount over so that I could mount the microphone in a more natural location with reference to the arm.At just over 120 dollars at the time of writing, this mic offers a lot of bang for your buck. I’ve tested the Fifine USB Mics, the Blue Yeti USB, and many other ‘creator’ focused microphones, and I’ve been most impressed with the AKG for it’s very rich, natural ability to make voices sound real. Good buy for a semi-professional creator.

A+ for the money
Is this the best cardioid condenser money can buy? No. But I do think this is the best condenser you can buy for the money. At <$150, this is an extraordinary value.Build Quality: Looking at the build quality first, this is a 10/10. Solid metal body, couple with a dual layer mesh screen around the 22mm capsule (0.86 inches). The mount (not really a shock mount) is basic but solid. The microphone attaches securely.Performance: This is where the budget comes into play. This is NOT a $500+ microphone, so don't expect it to perform like one. With that said, the noise floor and self-noise is VERY low. Even recording in my untreated home office, the sound is very clean. The RF shielding is very good as well. No noticeable interference from cellphones and electronics within a couple of inches. The plosive performance is just ok. I wish it came with a pop filter, but you can get one aftermarket for pretty cheap to improve the rejection of plosives. If speaking off axis, it really is quite reasonable.Handling noise is pretty poor. This will work best when mounted to a microphone stand in front of you or your subject, and never touching the mic or stand. There is no shock mount that I know of, other than the mount included, which does nothing to minimize shock/handling noise.Styling: Subjective I know, but I do like the styling. This is my first AKG mic, though I've always appreciated the visual aesthetic. Certainly a unique look, and very much "AKG".I really would have not problems recommending this mic at the price point. This delivers first and foremost on sound quality, being very clean with a low noise. Maybe a touch bright but with plenty of body in the low end, leaning sibilant but not overly sibilant. It'll benefit from a little EQ. Sacrifices are made for the sake of price in the mount for sure, as well as plosive rejection, but these are easily avoided/resolved with a good microphone stand and pop filter. A+ for the money for sure.
