NETGEAR GS108PEv3 8-Port Gigabit PoE+ Managed Switch – Long-Term Real-World Review (9 Years of Use)
I purchased this switch in 2016 and it’s still running perfectly in 2025 — over 9 years of continuous 24/7 operation with zero issues.**Primary use:** Powering and connecting 3–5 PoE security cameras at my home (typically 4 cameras at a time over the years). The switch’s 4 PoE/PoE+ ports provide up to 53W total budget, which has been more than enough for my setup (standard 802.3af cameras, usually 7-12W each).**What I actually use:**- Only the basic switching and PoE functions — I’ve never needed the “Plus” managed features (VLANs, QoS, etc.) until recently.- It just sits on a shelf and works silently with no fan noise.**Reliability notes:**- Survived multiple power outages, surges (I do have it on a UPS).- No port failures, no rebooting needed, no dropped cameras.- Even when I switch ISPs the wired PoE cameras usually just take a reset (ReoLink) to get back on the network for app access (the cameras are still writing to SD card tho)I can’t provide technical benchmarks or power-draw measurements, but in everyday home use with PoE cameras it has been 100% reliable. The fact that a ~9-year-old unit is still performing like new makes it excellent value for anyone setting up a small PoE camera or IoT system and wants something that will last.If you need a simple, rock-solid PoE switch for a few cameras or access points and don’t want to replace it every couple of years, this GS108PEv3 is still a very safe buy. Highly recommended for that use case.

Excellent switch with one caveat-difficult to setup
This is an excellent switch. It’s fast, small, attractive, and has a great set of features. That’s especially true for the price. It has PoE. It has 802.1Q VLANs. It looks and feels nice. The web interface is exceedingly simple to understand and use. There is only one gripe with the GS108PE: the abomination that is the NETGEAR Switch Discovery Tool (NSDT). It finds nothing. It doesn’t work. It is really a combination with a sort of weird DHCP implementation on the switch’s management software itself. Between the two of them, it will look like your switch is not working correctly. This is even worse if it appears to work intermittently. If your switch does not get a DHCP address immediately upon boot, it sets itself to a static IP address and doesn’t retry. You need to connect to the switch over ethernet and manually set a static IP on your computer to access the switch. The NETGEAR Switch Discovery Tool (NSDT), made by the manufacturer and completely aware of this behavior could do this for you. It sounds like that’s what it would do given it’s name. No, it just does a simple NMAP of your network and looks for any switches. What a piece of junk. Once you get past that hurdle, though, this switch is great.

I’m happy with its performance and value.
This NETGEAR 8-port switch is a solid choice for small networks. It’s easy to set up and provides reliable gigabit speeds. The PoE+ feature is a big plus, allowing me to power devices like IP cameras and wireless access points without needing separate power adapters. The compact size makes it easy to place on a desk or mount on a wall.

Great POE switch for a home lab
I was looking for an affordable POE switch to add to my home lab. I wasn’t going to be doing anything too fancy with it, but I did want the capability to remote into the switch and do some basic administrator of it, but nothing at the level of Cisco IOS. I already had an unmanaged Netgear switch in the lab, so I opted to stay with the brand I already knew and trusted, and look for model that offered POE capability. After looking at what was available, I went with the GS108PEv3, and purchased an Open-Box one from Amazon warehouse. Going this route, I save $15 on the switch and still had the guaranteed that is something was wrong with it, Amazon would refund me the cost. Luckily, I didn’t need to use this service, switch came well wrapped from the warehouse, with no obvious scratches or marks on it. Switch booted up right away and I immediately went through the paces of configuring it.First thing first, firmware update check. One was available and I immediately upgraded it. Came up right after the upgrade, so no chip problem there. Even though this is categorized as a managed switch, the actual settings are pretty basic, and easily understood. Next came the actual reason for this, powering up a couple POR devices I had laying about. Again, plugged them in, and everything came up as expected. Tested all the ports on the switch, and everything was communicating as expected. I will not be testing any network intensive products, so I do not expect this device to have any issues with the traffic I will be generating.Overall, I’m happy with my new additional my home lab. It adds the POE functionality that I wanted, and with breaking bank.

A good POE switch
I have tried a few different brands of POE switches over the years to find that perfect switch for my needs and have settled on these little guys. I have worked with manufacturers who claimed POE+ or 1G speeds but did not deliver. Netgear POE switches just work. Nothing too fancy about them but they deliver what they promise and if you work with POE switches, that is always a good thing. I do have to say that you’re getting what you pay for with these switches so they’re my standard when testing other brands now.
